(p2) Nephrite is how old? This isn’t even manga canon so was he even reincarnated like the victims or is he literally thousands of years old? Regardless his “Maxfield Stanton” persona comes off looking like a man AT LEAST in his 30’s and its just so fucking creepy cause here we have this adult man actually TRYING to influence an 8th grader Naru for his own agenda. He convinces her to meet up for secret meetings while telling her “not to tell anyone,” to steal from her mom
(p3) and even physically assaults her himself not once but TWICE! I don’t care if he never had romantic/sexual intentions towards Naru his actions still scream PREDATOR all over! In fact, I think the fact that he DOESN’T start out having any sort of tender feelings for Naru makes it even the worse! The man is quite literally, only using her. And yet the message we’re supposed to take away is that this behaivour is all okay because all he needs is the power of your LURRV
(p4) to make him see the light and get him to “change.” Honestly the fact that he actually DOES begin to grow to care about Naru makes me even angry, its selling a message to girls that this actually works! That the bad boy CAN change and its YOUR job to fix him! No matter how bad things get, just continue to love and trust him, eventually your feelings will get through to him! Holy fuck, this is literally the most toxic message you can put out there to girls, wtf 90’s anime?!
(p5) That’s why it really grinds my gears the double standards in fandoms that it seems like a guy can get away with anything as long as he’s the traditional “bad boy.” Say what you will about UsaMamo and their age gap and problems in the 90’s anime but at least Mamoru was NEVER literally using Usagi, controlling her in any way or manipulating her to lie to authority figures. He also genuinely loved her and didn’t need to “learn” to.
(p6 or 7?) I don’t know about you but I’ll easily take the “boring” fairy-tale, destined love story between two minors any day of the week over the “more interesting” fix the bad boy story and make him grow to love you any day of the week! They both might be unrealistic but at least one is trying to send a positive message to girls rather than put them in actual dangerous situations! ALSO ONE STARTED WHEN THEY WERE BOTH MINORS AND THE OTHER IS LITERALLY WITH AN ADULT MAN WHO SHOULD KNOW BETTER!
Whew, there’s a lot here. I’m gonna try my best but to my knowledge (which is still more or less incomplete)- No One Actually Knows The Ages of The Shitennou In The 90s Anime. We can only assume what they were. The only thing we have evidence of is the Materials collection where they listed the ages as being:
Jadeite- 18
Nephrite- 19
Zoisite- 16
Kunzite- 25 (aka the only actual adult in the whole group. Meant to be Leader/Big Brother figure. Which fits.)
But we know how well the 90s Anime likes to actually keep ages correct./sarcasm.
So, my assumption considering what I -do- know more or less (And it’s a grab-bag my friend) about some things, I just assumed that the Shitennou are between the ages of 18-25yrs old. <- Which is just a sort of thing I decided but it’s mostly because, hey, Mamoru’s 18, they might as well be a bit older anyway.
Now in the 90s anime, they were sealed away as they were part of the Dark Kingdom. Unlike the Manga which made a special and specific note to say: Hey, everyone was reincarnated!- the 90s Anime doesn’t even give us that.
We’re left to assume that he and everyone else were in a 1000 year sleep. Or they may HAVE been reborn but their former lives/personalities may have been erased when Beryl got a hold of them.
We just don’t know specifically what happened there.
Take it with a grain of salt.
Anyway, lets talk about Nephrite and Naru and why they’re the fandom darling’s ship. And yes, you can include me too because I DO have a soft spot for them considering I was like, 12yrs old when I rewatched the series and saw that particular arc and it totally made Baby!Me cry buckets because it was SO SAD.
Ages and all aside- the reason it worked so well, thematically, is the writing and slow burn of their meeting. As a kid, you rationalize that Nephrite is only doing these things and hurting others because he’s ‘Evil’ and shit and you hoped he turned good later (and all that jazz). And at the time, you really believe that Naru’s love is totally going to do that ‘True Love can Totally Cure All’ thing.
As an Adult, I can see the whole thing as a sub-genre of Romance (make of it what you will, but it’s there and it spawned from earlier romance novels and bodice rippers) of Dark Romance genre. Which is a thing.
Naru/Nephrite are like Dark Romance Lite. For Kids. (yes I rolled my eyes while typing this but BEAR WITH ME HERE)
Also, gonna point out, again, the Bad Boy stereotype wasn’t that. It used to be a guy who had a reputation for violence or being bad, is actually mischaracterized by everyone because he often gets CAUGHT fighting or doing a thing while in the service of trying to do GOOD.
Bad Boys are only bad boys because the world AROUND them labelled them as such and in reality they’re actually GOOD PEOPLE that just get the worst sort of luck.
It’s not until later that the stereotype itself became short hand for “Violent jerkass will be good if you give him a Scooby Snack called Love.”
Anyway, my point is, Naru and Nephrite’s arc has a point to it at least (and it’s a working theory I have that because of Naru and Nephrite that Sailor Moon becomes more forgiving towards the villains later on and does that whole ‘lets give out redemption at random! But that’s neither here nor there.).
The main point is that it gives Usagi an insight to the collateral damage/ect that can happen to normal people like Naru because of the Dark Kingdom and why keeping her identity even MORE underwraps is a GOOD THING because that’s the thing that attracted Nephrite to Naru in the first place was Sailor Moon ALWAYS being there and being around her.
It also helps because the ENTIRE TIME, Usagi has been telling Naru over and over again that Neprhite is a terrible person. He’s Bad! He’s Awful! But it’s Naru that doesn’t listen.
Like at no point and time up until Nephrite gets hurt trying to save her, Sailor Moon was TOTALLY NOT on his side and found him suspect forever. (also, maybe I’m alone, but it feels like Usagi never understood until the end of the season, what the hell Naru was on to do what she did. She understood that - hey someone’s hurt she’s trying to save him, but on another level it was “???What.”)
Aka: Basically I think their arc was needed as a whole for character and plot development and teaching how to let grief work itself out and how to let go. (The series never touches on this concept ever again. Like The FucK. It’s a GOOD subject!)
But I DO agree. Nephrite never pretended, he never really cared and was definitely a predator and preying on Naru and her feelings. I don’t believe he even loved her back or got what love was. He had a fondness for her - like, you would a pet, I think. And I always believed it was a complete one-sided thing on Naru’s part- because he never returned those feelings.
His entire thing was capturing Sailor Moon. If he had to use Naru to get to Sailor Moon - who keeps showing up to Save Naru and Naru just keeps somehow bumping into him for him to use- he’s gonna do it.
He was the Villain -therefore all his actions up until his semi-heel face turn (and even then it wasn’t so much he ‘Saw the light’ it was more like ‘ This particular human should not be hurt.’) were justifiable as that.
Villainy doesn’t give a shit. It truly does not.
I think I’m lax on the first season for a lot of things. This is one of them, unfortunately. I don’t have it in me to hate this arc too much or to hate the pairing.
I am, however, resentful and a bit mad with the fandom overlooking this and other pairings (I’m looking at you Chad and Rei. Because Chad is definitely NOT a fourteen or even sixteen year old boy. Just sayin’ guys.) when they constantly bitch about Mamoru and Usagi.
I think Nephrite gets a pass because nostalgia filters (Yes I have them) and ultimately because He IS Dead.
Yeah, that’s really what it is. Because Nephrite died in such a way in Naru’s arms, it fulfills some of the old tropes in a lot of stories (fairy-tales included) that frame the entire thing as a romantic sacrifice (or at least an emotional one.).
And yeah, it’s a terrible message to kids to tell them that “Hey, girl, if you love a dude just enough- if you endure his rage and abuse- your LOVE CAN CHANGE HIM”.
But it’s entirely unsurprising at that point that it’s there. If you sit back and look at the media from that era and up to -oh I say, Now. - you’ll see it’s always been a message here and there. Depending where you look. It’s lessen now, but back then? This was basically expected and acceptable storytelling element.
I’m gonna be honest, Anon, I’m bias. I’m bias as hell. I like Naru/Nephrite being a very doomed relationship that was not meant to flourish or work.
I do think it’s a by-product of things I’ve read and grew up on. (I am, admittedly, a person that was really into Vampires and other supernatural beings. So back then - as a kid who really liked supernatural stories and vampires and aliens stuff, Nephrite and Naru’s relationship as an age gap did not bother nor concern me- At the time. It’s mostly because as the target audience, I was never meant to ID with Nephrite. It was all about Naru and how she was feeling and what would make Naru happy. And I think that’s how some people still see it? If they don’t like the Senshi/Shitennou stuff, there was always Naru/Nephrite.)
Anyway, this is super long but the gist is:
Yeah, you’re right. It is wrong and there’s a lot of wrong messages in it.
Yes. The Fandom is being nitpicky and bias about what’s ‘inappropriate’ but won’t label everyone that that fits the same criteria. If Mamoru/Usagi is wrong, than Naru/Nephrite should be INFINITELY more so.
Technically (and this is a side bar here) a lot of Fairytales have a lot of toxic stuff in it too. Including always marrying the youngest girl. Beauty only. And several several other things in it.
If Mamoru/Usagi are a ‘boring fairtytale’ than people must not like stories at all because many many stories are BASED on that premise.
-and I’ll end it here. This is super long and I didn’t touch on anything in detail.-
